As 2024 draws to a close, SpaceX is making history once again. The company launched a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 22 Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, on December 28 at 8:48 p.m. EST. This marks the first of three planned launches to finish the year, with the satellites successfully entering low Earth orbit 65 minutes post-liftoff.

The Falcon 9’s first stage landed smoothly on the droneship Of Course I Still Love You in the Pacific, marking its 16th flight and safe recovery. SpaceX’s reusable rocket technology has played a pivotal role in enabling 132 launches in 2024 alone, with two more missions in the final days of the year.

Starlink remains central to SpaceX’s vision, with this mission boosting the network to nearly 6,700 active satellites — the largest constellation in history. SpaceX’s VP of Launch, Kiko Dontchev, emphasized the company’s commitment to reliability, stating, “ZERO failures” is the ultimate priority.

As SpaceX targets an ambitious 134 launches for the year, this momentum sets a strong foundation for 2025 and beyond, promising advancements in connectivity and space exploration.

Falcon 9’s Launch and Recovery

The December 28 mission showcased the remarkable efficiency of Falcon 9, deploying satellites while ensuring the safe recovery of its reusable first stage, which has completed 16 flights.

Starlink’s Unprecedented Growth

The Starlink megaconstellation continues to expand, delivering global broadband coverage with nearly 6,700 active satellites in orbit, solidifying SpaceX’s leadership in satellite technology.

A Record-Breaking Year for SpaceX

With 132 launches and only one failure, SpaceX highlights its emphasis on safety and reliability. Two more missions are scheduled to close 2024, marking one of the company’s most successful years to date.

Ambitions for 2025

SpaceX’s achievements this year set the stage for an exciting 2025, with plans to further enhance satellite networks, deepen reusable rocket technology, and expand interplanetary exploration.

Final Thoughts

SpaceX’s relentless drive to innovate and expand the possibilities of space exploration ensures its position as a pioneer in the aerospace industry. As 2024 ends, the company continues to redefine what’s achievable in spaceflight and satellite technology.
